Trope Analysis Wiki:Rules and guidelines

Like any wiki or website based primarily on user-created content, there are several rules and guidelines to consider when editing pages, creating pages, etc.

Guidelines

Behavioural

  • Edit wars are prohibited, no exceptions. An edit war is defined by two editors constantly reverting each other's work over the assumption that the other is wrong. Please take any concerns you have over material in an article to the article's talk page.
  • Keep it civil in both edit reasons and talk page replies. There's no need to be rude to someone for any reason, even if they were rude to you. Have a problem with someone's attitude? Don't hesitate to contact a wiki sysop if necessary.
  • Avoid bias at all costs. We're not a wiki to complain about things; we're not a wiki to "gush" about things, either. If you wish to discuss personal preference or opinion, feel free to visit our forums.

Content

  • Subjective content is not allowed, end of story. This goes with the last point in "Behavioural Guidelines", in that any bias or opinion is not allowed on the wiki, and this includes any articles or tropes that rely on personal opinion to exist.
  • If you're interested in creating an article, avoid making stubs for other people to work on for you. Unless it's absolutely the only way to start an article, please add more than a sentence or two to any articles you begin. Although not necessary, it is also recommended that you write up at least a paragraph to get things started for others.
  • Always have tact when editing. Avoid "witty" sarcasm, in-jokes, swearing, etc. Otherwise, this rule likely speaks for itself.
  • Potholing of any kind usually isn't allowed. This is more of a rule of thumb than anything, but a heavy reliance on potholing to other articles is usually an excuse to avoid explaining things. While potholing itself isn't against the rules per say, please don't use it too often. Potholing is the practice of linking to an article "secretly" via a completely different word or phrase.
  • No puns. No exceptions. As you should always have tact when editing, it goes without saying that you shouldn't make puns. We're not a wiki for making crass, poorly written jokes, and this includes puns.

Tropes

  • Do not shoehorn tropes into real life. Tropes, by their very definition, are literary devices - this spans across the vast area of fiction, but that is where it ends. While tropes can possibly be observed in real life, it's of our best interest to not do such for the most part. To illustrate the fine line between observing a trope in real life and breaking this rule, it's the difference between adding a real life example of a trope occurring and desperately trying to work a trope into a situation. Tropes are also not to be used to criticize real life figures, but that should go without saying.
